Job Description

The Plant Operations Manager leads the Operations staff and manages all aspects of operations of a power plant to ensure safe, environmentally compliant and efficient operations of the plant.

What You'll Do...

  • Responsible for the operations of all plant equipment from refuse receiving, combustion processing, steam and power generation, air pollution controls and ash handling.
  • Leads Plant Operations in alignment with Safety, Environmental and Operations standards, policies and procedures
  • Actively supports and emphasizes importance of safety and environmental programs and ensures regulatory compliance
  • Promotes productivity and teamwork in Operations with open communication, timely decision making, and use of personal leadership skills to set high standards of performance while providing the direction necessary to achieve that performance
  • Provides strong leadership over the lock out/tag out program to promote safe operations and maintenance activities
  • Monitors plant and unit performance, conducts root cause analysis, and leads investigations to develop and implement corrective actions
  • Understands the functions of all power plant equipment and capable of providing expert guidance to Maintenance Supervision for prioritizing the scheduling of work orders
  • Highly proficient working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Manages the ordering of all air pollution control and other chemicals
  • Oversees the boiler water chemistry treatment program
  • Coordinates unit load scheduling, testing, status, outage plans and acts as primary interface with Commercial Operations for reporting unit status and capabilities
  • Ensures that Shift Supervisors are trained to abide by all company, state and federal policies and procedures concerning environmental parameters, safety, housekeeping, and employee relations
  • Ensures regulatory compliance and collects and submits evidence in support of NERC reliability standards
  • Maintains communications with other areas of the Company including Safety, Environmental, Human Resources, Energy, and other Corporate Management Teams to coordinate activities and facilitate process improvement initiatives
  • Reviews daily logs and reports of shift activities. Ensure action is taken on all discrepancies
  • Proficient with PI Datalink and capable of analyzing power plant operating data.
  • Develops annual performance reviews for each shift supervisor to reward or change behavior. Reviews performance reviews of all operators as they are evaluated by the shift supervisors.
  • Coordinates emergency response efforts (i.e. winter and summer readiness, freeze protection, integrated contingency plan, spill response plan, etc.)
  • Provides regular feedback to employees on their performance to allow them to capitalize on their strength and focus on opportunities for improvement
  • Develops, implements and revises Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) to drive continuous improvement of plant performance and ensure consistent operations between crews
  • Performs plant inspections and provide direction to Labor Manager to ensure proper housekeeping standard
  • Able to fulfill the responsibilities of the Plant Manager position in their absence

Who You Are...

  • 6 to 8 years of power plant experience or 6 to 8 years' experience in a manufacturing, oil & gas, or chemical industry environment.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a Technical related field
  • Knowledge of power plant systems and operations, and comprehensive knowledge in the area of responsibility
  • Demonstrated effective leadership and personnel management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) at all levels of NRG
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all individuals
  • Strong organizational skills and capability of handling multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong strategic business sense and industry knowledge/experience.
  • Microsoft Office Suite
